- Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (single habituated gorilla family in a scenic volcanic landscape)
Each trek allows visitors one unforgettable hour with a fully habituated mountain gorilla family in their natural rainforest habitat.
Permits
- Gorilla trekking permit: $800 per person (foreign non-resident)
Permits include park entry, guided trekking, and one hour with gorillas. They do not include transport, accommodation, or porters (if required).
Age & Group Size
- Minimum age: 15 years
- Maximum group size: up to 8 people per gorilla family
- No upper age limit, but assistance options are available for guests who need support
Optional help includes:
- Porter assistance (for bags and hiking support)
- Sedan chair (for guests with limited mobility in some sectors)
Difficulty
Gorilla trekking lasts approximately 2–6 hours, depending on gorilla movement and forest conditions. The terrain can be steep, muddy, and physically demanding. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended.
Essential gear:
- Hiking boots
- Rain jacket
- Long trousers and gloves
- Water and light snacks (before the trek only)
Rules & Conservation Guidelines
To protect the gorillas and ensure safe encounters:
- Maintain at least 7 meters distance at all times
- No flash photography
- No eating, drinking, or smoking near gorillas
- Avoid loud talking or sudden movements
- Do not trek if you are sick (to protect gorillas from human disease)
- Follow ranger instructions at all times
These rules are strictly enforced for conservation and safety.
Booking Information
Gorilla trekking permits are extremely limited and in very high demand, especially during peak seasons:
- June–August
- December–February
We recommend booking 6–8 months in advance to secure your preferred dates and location. A deposit is required upon booking.
We handle all permit arrangements directly with the Uganda Wildlife Authority and coordinate your full trekking experience.
Chimpanzee Tracking & Permits (Uganda Primate Experience)
Where
Chimpanzee tracking is offered in several top primate destinations across Uganda, mainly in:
- Kibale National Park (best and most popular chimp experience – highest concentration of habituated chimps in Africa)
- Kyambura Gorge (within Queen Elizabeth National Park – dramatic “Valley of Apes” setting)
- Budongo Forest Reserve (near Murchison Falls – quieter forest experience)
Each tracking experience allows you time with a habituated chimpanzee community, observing them as they feed, play, call, and move through the forest canopy.
Permits
- Kibale chimp tracking permit: approx. $300 per person (foreign non-resident)
- Kyambura Gorge & Budongo: typically $80–$100 per person (varies by season and Uganda Wildlife Authority updates)
Permits cover guided tracking and time with chimpanzees, but do not include transport, accommodation, or park entry fees in all cases.
Age & Group Size
- Minimum age: 12 years
- Group size: typically up to 6–8 visitors per chimp group
- No strict upper age limit, but forest terrain may require moderate fitness and optional walking support
Difficulty
Chimpanzee tracking usually lasts 2–5 hours, depending on chimp movement and forest conditions. Terrain varies from easy forest walks to muddy and uneven jungle paths. A moderate level of fitness is recommended, especially in rainy conditions. Proper footwear and light rain protection are essential.
Rules & Safety Guidelines
To protect both visitors and chimpanzees:
- Maintain at least 8–10 meters distance
- No touching or feeding chimpanzees
- No flash photography
- No eating or drinking near chimpanzees
- Avoid loud noise or sudden movements
- If sick (flu, cough), you may not be allowed to track for animal safety
Guides enforce all rules strictly to ensure safety and conservation.
Booking Information
Chimpanzee permits are in high demand, especially during peak seasons:
- June–August
- December–February
We recommend booking 6–8 months in advance for chimp trekking (earlier for Kibale during peak season). A deposit is required to secure permits. We handle all bookings through Uganda Wildlife Authority on your behalf.
